Finally … some vindication
by Pastor Spencer
Please read the article entitled “The day the circus came to church” written by Pastor Don Hattaway (Tabernacle Baptist Church, Cartersville) and appearing in The Christian Index (July 30, 2009). In case there’s not a copy of The Christian Index at hand, the article can be read online HERE. More and more voices are beginning to cry in this ecclesiastical wilderness, and my hope is that the Lord is about to do great and mighty things for his church in our place and time. “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts …” (Hebrews 3:15; 4:7).

Sad days are here for the church, I fear. We have forgotten where I focus should be in worship, and then it ceases to be worship and becomes circus/entertainment/joke, you choose . . . but it’s not worship.
Spencer, I did a little post on this subject on July 1 . . . take a look if you like. http://billhaynes.wordpress.com/2009/07/01/so-whom-do-we-really-worship/
Pastor,
Pastor Hattaway is our Chaplin at the fire department. I will say that sadly there is a church in that very community that inspired this sermon in general. Unbelievable. And yes; it is very much a hot topic but not confined to just Cartersville.
How quickly we forget our First Love! Remember the days when The Lord was so sweet to our souls that praise just flowed out of our mouths, and worship was just a thought away! This ‘attitude’ is so attention catching that ever unbelievers notice and ask questions. Is that not the best opening for sharing the Gospel? May God pour out His marvelous Grace on our, no HIS, church.
I simply could hardly believe it when I read this article in the Christian Index. I have felt completely and totally alone in my thoughts/feelings on the church and how it has become a circus of sorts. Rev Hattaway hit the nail on the head…that’s just all there is to it!!
I miss the rich tradition that the Baptists have lost along the way ( not just Baptists I realize, but that’s what I am at heart and that is what I have seen the most of)…I am so tired of karoke singing following words on the drop screen and the “show” that is put on in the place of a choir these days. The “shows” that are put on these days in the name of worship put idolatry on in full force. God Help us all.
